Numerous passages in the Quran and Sunnah remind us of the importance of avoiding excess. Here is an example from each…
In the Quran
Allah Ta’ala says: “Eat and drink, but do not be excessive, for He [Allah] does not love those who are excessive.” (Quran 7:31)
In the Sunnah
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A person fills no worse vessel than the stomach. A few mouthfuls are enough to sustain him, but if necessary, let one third be for food, one third for drink and one third for air.” (Sahih Tirmidhi)
According to Ibn Al-Qayyim
In his book on authentic prophetic medicine, Ibn Al-Qayyim explains that eating is divided into three levels:
- Need
- Sufficiency
- Excess
Regarding eating until full, Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim explains that this concerns those who do so frequently. If it remains exceptional, there is no harm in it.
