Everything you need to know about the date palm
You are probably familiar with the date. But do you know where these fruits come from? No? Then we invite you to learn all about the date palm.
The origins of the date palm
Dates grow on the date palm, which has been cultivated for thousands of years. This tree is mainly grown in the oases of the Middle East and North Africa, where it originated. Today, however, it can be found in many regions around the world. Its height varies with the climate but can reach 30 meters. Its leaves are pinnate and measure between 4 and 7 meters long.
The date palm needs plenty of sunshine and moist soil to produce good fruit. This means it cannot be planted just anywhere. Its fruit is only edible when the tree receives enough warmth and sunlight.
Along with the coconut palm, it is the world’s most widely cultivated palm for fruit production.
The different varieties of date palm
There are many varieties of date palm. However, the choice of variety to plant depends on the region, as some are better suited to the local climate. Preferences also vary from place to place, because every date variety is unique and has its own flavor.
To name just a few, let’s look at some of the best-known date varieties this tree produces.
- The Deglet Nour grows in Tunisia. Its name means “fingers of light,” because it is translucent and the pit can be seen through it. This variety requires considerable care during cultivation.
- The Medjool date, nicknamed the “date of kings,” originated in Morocco. Its tree produces the largest dates. They are especially sought after for their fleshy, creamy texture and delicious flavor.
- The Sukkari date, whose name means “sweet,” is mainly grown in Medina, Saudi Arabia. As its name suggests, it is the sweetest of dates. It is smooth and melts in the mouth.
- The Ajwa date is also grown in Medina, Saudi Arabia. It is small and black but has a truly unique flavor. According to Islamic tradition, this date received the blessing of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who planted these palms himself.
