Dates grow on the date palm, which has been cultivated for thousands of years. This tree is mainly grown in the oases of the Middle East and North Africa, where it originated. Today, however, it can be found in many regions around the world. Its height varies with the climate but can reach 30 meters. Its leaves are pinnate and measure between 4 and 7 meters long.

The date palm needs plenty of sunshine and moist soil to produce good fruit. This means it cannot be planted just anywhere. Its fruit is only edible when the tree receives enough warmth and sunlight.
